Ugh, Valentine’s Day is coming up. Before we get to the sappy, let's talk about why I hate the day of love.

loveyourself

First of all, this holiday is bathed in bloodshed. Whichever priest or Bishop you believe was the original St. Valentine, it is understood that the holy man was put to death by Emperor Claudius II. My favorite story behind the history is that the Emperor outlawed marriage due to a need to fortify his army.  A catholic priest didn’t agree and continued to secretly marry young lovers. He was caught and put to death by the Emperor.

Second, I teach middle school children. Have you seen the heartache and drama that occurs on a middle school campus on a daily basis. Now take that and up the stakes exponentially on Valentine’s Day. Raging hormones and sugar highs do not mix well. I always loved it when I taught 6th graders and they would ask, with beautiful hope in their eyes, “Ms., when is our Valentine party???”  And I would have to break their little hearts and remind them we are not in elementary school anymore and we don’t have fun. Ever. Okay that’s mostly in jest, we do have fun, but not organized, party based fun.  As a middle school teacher I am thrilled when Valentine’s Day happens on a weekend (like this year).

Third, I don’t want a gift from my amazing husband just because he’s socially pressured. I want flowers because he was just thinking of me or chocolate when he noticed I was having a bad day. I don’t want random, ridiculous, pink based monstrosities because there is an expectation. Darn it, I want to feel loved any day not just because he was reminded by Facebook!

So many people put way too much of their personal value in whether or not they have someone to share the day with. Ladies and gentlemen, please remember you need to love yourself first. You are the best person in your life and once you realize that, happiness can follow. Believe me I know this is a hard task. But you will only create more stress for yourself if you base your valentine happiness on someone else doting on you. You are enough, everything else is just extra.

So sorry for the rant, I promise next week we will have the sappy love filled post, but I needed to say it. Tell me what you think. Do you love the day of love? Am I just jaded, do I need to embrace the crazy???  Tell me what you think.
